In highschool, one of our required readings was “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It’s an amazing tale of a Mariners struggle with good and evil, self-rightiousness and selflessness, and the ability to see the beauty in all living -and inanimate- things. In the story, the Mariner curses himself and his crew by shooting down an albatross, a symbol of good luck. Chris Jordan, a photographer from Seattle, archives photos taken on the Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral somewhere near the middle of the North Pacific. The photographs show Albatross carcasses strewn on their sandy mausoleums, their bellys filled with fragments and scraps of platic and filthy waste. The young birds are fed scraps of plastic and waste that appears to their mothers as food in the water, causing many of the young Albatross’ to die from starvation, choking, and poisoning.
